Mission Statement

The year 2010 has been designated as the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion in the recognition that notwithstanding the affluence of European Society, 78 million people (16% of Europe 's population) still live below the poverty line.

It is intended to raise public awareness and convey the message that poverty and exclusion are disruptive to social and economic development and reaffirm the political commitment of the EU to make a decisive impact on the eradication of poverty. The European Year should also give a voice to people experiencing poverty and social exclusion and reaffirm the importance of collective responsibility for combating poverty and exclusion.
